2019 VLSAA Board of Directors Nominees

At large Director Nominee

Breanna Weaver JD/MELP'17

Breanna Weaver JD/MELP'17 Statement of Interest Response:
My five year vision for VLS is one of outreach to alumni and reconnection to the campus. I believe that one of the things that bond VLS students to the school are the annual events we hold on campus. My hope is to expand these events to include alumni in a networking fashion for the students. I would also like to allow alumni to reconnect with the school by hosting regional fundraiser events that correlate with annual events on campus.

The skills I bring to accomplish these goals are a strong work ethic and dedication to the school. I am willing to put in the time in to attend meetings, organize events, and perform outreach to the VLS community. To that end, I would galvanize the energy and enthusiasm of the alumni by sharing my own good experience at VLS and encouraging others to do the same. I believe that by sharing my own good experiences, it will encourage others to do the same.

As a student, my activities included:

  • Barristers Board of Directors
    • Member at Large 2014-2015
    • Secretary 2015-2016
    • Vice President 2016-2017
  • Alliance
    • Member at Large 2014-2015
    • Co-Chair 2015-2016
    • Publicity Chair 2016-2017
  • Student Ambassador, 2015-2017
    • As an ambassador, I worked mostly with incoming students. However, one of my proudest accomplishments is a service project I facilitated that benefitted Have Justice Will Travel, a VLS alumni founded non-profit, which helps victims of domestic and sexual violence. After a weeklong drive collecting toiletry items, students came together to put together packets for women going into shelter.
  • Women’s Law Group
    • Director, Vagina Monologues 2016-2017

As an alumni, my activities include:

  • Lawyer Mental Health Well Being Committee, Alumni Member, 2018
  • Light in the Dark, Mental Health Committee, Speaker.

I believe my professional and community activity will help me serve as a Board member due to my range of experiences as a student and graduate. I believe I could help the school serve students, whatever career path they may choose. As a student, I worked in multiple student clinics on VLS and since graduation, I have worked in a large, corporate law firm as well as a non-profit. My experiences are listed below:

  • Vermont Network Against Domestic and Sexual Violence, Staff Attorney, 2018- Present
  • Boies, Schiller, Flexner LLP, Staff Attorney, 2017-2018
  • Safeline Advocacy Organization, Hotline Advocate, 2017-2018
  • ABA Environmental Transactions and Brownfield Committee; Writer, 2015-2017; Editor, 2018-2019
  • Environmental and Natural Resources Law Clinic; Student Clinician, 2016; Advanced Student Clinician, 2017
  • Center for Applied Human Rights, Student Fellow, 2017

Having reviewed the standing committees, I would be proud to serve wherever needed. However, the two committees I would choose are the Mentoring Committee and the Nominating Committee. I am particularly excited about these committees because I am excited about getting alumni involved with current students. By mentoring current students, my hope is to connect students with resources and alumni. Additionally, I would enjoy serving on the Nominating Committee because it helps connect the alumni with the school.

Finally, I have the resources and ability to make the Board a priority over the next three years. After graduation, I remained in Vermont- approximately 20 minutes from the school. I will be able to make most meetings in person. I would also be able to attend other events on campus as a Board member. I also work in Montpelier, and could attend and participate in regional events.
