In March of this year, Dr. Deborah Birx, the White House coronavirus response coordinator under Donald Trump, declared that the vast majority of America's deaths from the COVID-19 pandemic could have been prevented if only we had adopted safety measures that were proven to slow the spread of the virus. Looking back, we can see many missed opportunities that might have saved many lives and permitted a much quicker return to some kind of normalcy. Learning from that experience, we must prepare now for the next pandemic—clarifying and strengthening public health laws, adopting new rules for official communications, and avoiding politicization of the government's response.
